New research by Bloomberg NEF estimates that data centres built between now and 2033 could consume as much electricity as India uses today, highlighting the scale of the AI industry’s growing energy requirements. Developers are racing to construct hyperscale facilities capable of supporting increasingly complex AI models, many of which require significantly more computing power than traditional cloud applications.

The rapid increase in electricity demand is being fuelled by the widespread deployment of graphics processing units, or GPUs, which power generative AI systems. These specialised chips consume substantially more electricity than conventional processors and require extensive cooling infrastructure, making AI data centres among the most energy-intensive industrial facilities in operation today.

Technology companies including Microsoft, Google, Meta, Amazon and OpenAI have announced tens of billions of dollars in investments to expand AI infrastructure, creating intense competition for electricity, land and grid connections. Utilities and governments are also accelerating investments in transmission networks and power generation to meet the expected surge in demand.

The expansion is expected to reshape global energy markets. Analysts say electricity demand from AI infrastructure will increasingly support investments in natural gas, nuclear energy, solar and battery storage, as operators seek reliable sources of round-the-clock power. Renewable energy alone is unlikely to satisfy the sector’s growing needs, prompting many developers to pursue a mix of energy sources.

The boom has also intensified concerns about environmental sustainability. Beyond electricity consumption, modern AI data centres require vast quantities of water for cooling and large volumes of critical minerals for servers, networking equipment and power systems. Environmental groups have warned that unchecked expansion could increase carbon emissions and place additional strain on local water resources.

Governments are responding by reviewing electricity market rules and grid planning policies to accommodate the rapid growth of AI infrastructure without undermining energy security or increasing costs for households. In several countries, regulators are considering reforms to speed up grid connections while ensuring developers contribute to the cost of new transmission infrastructure.

Despite the challenges, analysts expect investment in AI infrastructure to continue accelerating as demand for advanced computing grows across industries. The projected fourfold increase in electricity consumption underscores how artificial intelligence is reshaping not only the technology sector but also global energy markets. Meeting that demand will require substantial investment in generation capacity, transmission networks and more energy-efficient computing technologies over the coming decade.
