Australia is seeking stronger cooperation from major technology companies as the government moves to tighten internet safety rules and develop new regulations for artificial intelligence.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on Apple and other technology firms to support Canberra’s efforts to protect Australians online, particularly children.
During a meeting with Apple chief Tim Cook, Albanese discussed Australia’s social-media restrictions for children under 16, parental controls and measures designed to give families greater control over online content.
The talks also covered artificial intelligence, with the Australian government preparing legislation aimed at establishing safety and accountability standards for AI.
Albanese said governments and technology companies must work together to address emerging risks while ensuring Australians can benefit from new technologies.
The government is also considering a proposed digital duty of care that would place greater responsibility on online platforms to reduce exposure to harmful content.
Australia’s approach is being closely watched internationally as governments grapple with how to balance technological innovation, online freedom and stronger protections for children and other users.
