Amazon Web Services will invest $1 billion to create a new engineering organization that will deploy thousands of AI experts alongside customers to build and launch artificial intelligence systems, the company has announced.

The AWS Forward Deployed Engineering organization will work directly with customers to develop and deploy so-called agentic AI systems, which can perform tasks and make decisions with limited human intervention.
AWS expects the initiative to shorten AI deployments from months to days while helping customers develop the skills to operate the systems independently after AWS engineers leave.
The new organization will focus on production AI systems using customers’ data, governance frameworks and business processes rather than standalone consulting projects.
AWS engineers will work alongside business, engineering and security teams and use AI agents to accelerate software development, with human engineers overseeing and verifying the work.
The organization is already working with customers including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, Ricoh and Southwest Airlines.
“The NFL has millions of fans who want to consume football content throughout the year, including the offseason. We innovate at the pace and scale needed to meet the high expectations of our fans,” said Gary Brantley, chief information officer of the National Football League.
“To create new digital experiences for our fans, the NFL partnered with AWS FDE and got engineers building alongside our team to launch into production in just weeks. Together, we created new fan-facing products like NFL Fantasy AI and NFL IQ that allow fans to interact with NFL data like never before. The engagement from fans and broadcasters was measurable from day one and was made possible by AWS’s delivery model.”
Customers will leave engagements with deployed AI systems, knowledge graphs, technical documentation, workflows and trained employees capable of operating the systems without continued support from AWS.
The engineers will also deploy a semantic layer within a customer’s AWS environment that connects enterprise data sources, enriches metadata and creates a governed knowledge graph that AI agents can use.
AWS said customer data will remain within the customer’s governance framework, with security measures including hardware-based isolation and end-to-end encryption.
The move expands AWS’s effort to provide customers with engineers who can help move AI projects from experimentation into production. Its Generative AI Innovation Center has worked on thousands of customer solutions over the past three years.
Those projects have included work with BMW to reduce service disruptions across 23 million connected vehicles, Jabil on a manufacturing assistant and Lyft on driver support, which AWS estimates helped resolve issues 87% faster.
AWS’s new Forward Deployed Engineering teams will initially focus on organizations seeking to deploy AI in production, particularly in regulated industries, financial services and government, where security and governance requirements can make adoption more complex.
