Google Photos Adds AI Editing, “Nano Banana” Tools, and More

Google Photos Introduces New AI Tools and “Nano Banana” Editing for Next-Level Creativity

Google is supercharging its popular Photos app with a wave of new AI-powered capabilities, including advanced editing tools powered by its “Nano Banana” model and expanded conversational search features that make interacting with images more intuitive than ever.

The tech giant announced the rollout on its official blog, revealing that users can now transform and restyle their photos in imaginative new ways. With Nano Banana in the Photos editor, users can tap “Help me edit” and simply describe the visual they want — whether it’s turning a selfie into a Renaissance-style portrait, a mosaic made of colorful tiles, or a storybook-inspired illustration.

AI Templates for Effortless Creativity

For those who find it tricky to craft prompts, Google is also adding a “Create with AI” section in the Photos app. Launching first on Android in the U.S. and India, this section introduces ready-made AI templates that instantly apply creative edits. Users can try popular transformations like “put me in a high-fashion photoshoot,” “create a professional headshot,” or “make me a winter holiday card.”

In the coming weeks, Google will also debut personalized templates that draw inspiration from users’ own photo galleries. These AI-generated edits will reflect individual hobbies, interests, and experiences — offering options such as “create a name doodle personalized to me” or “cartoon me with my hobbies.”

Smarter Search with “Ask Photos”

Google is expanding its Ask Photos feature — an AI tool that lets users search their photo libraries using natural language. Instead of scrolling endlessly, you can simply ask for “pictures from my Paris trip in 2018” or “photos with my dog and blue car,” and the app surfaces exactly what you’re looking for.

Starting this week, Ask Photos is rolling out to over 100 new countries and 17 additional languages, making it more accessible to users around the world.

A new “Ask” button also takes this interaction further. When viewing a specific photo, users can ask contextual questions, explore related moments, or even request edits directly — transforming a simple image into a dynamic, AI-driven experience.

Expanding What Memories Can Be

With these updates, Google Photos continues its evolution from a storage app into a full-fledged AI creativity and discovery hub. The introduction of Nano Banana, AI templates, and the expanded Ask Photos features represent a major step in bringing generative AI to everyday users — helping people edit, search, and rediscover their memories in ways that feel personal and intuitive.

Many of these new capabilities are already rolling out globally, with more to come in the next few weeks.
