In a move to modernize global policing, INTERPOL has launched a revised and advanced artificial intelligence toolkit designed to enhance crime detection, intelligence analysis, and operational efficiency.

As law enforcement agencies worldwide grapple with increasingly sophisticated criminal networks, INTERPOL’s AI-driven initiative aims to bridge the technological gap, equipping police forces with cutting-edge digital tools. The Toolkit for Responsible AI Innovation in Law Enforcement (AI Toolkit), published in June 2023 and updated in March 2025, will facilitate the responsiveness by law enforcement agencies.

INTERPOL’s AI toolkit integrates machine learning, natural language processing, and predictive analytics to help law enforcement agencies analyze vast amounts of data with unprecedented speed and accuracy. With cybercrime, human trafficking, and financial fraud on the rise, these AI tool promise to accelerate investigations and provide actionable intelligence in real time.

Interpol’s mandate offers four global programs, namely: counter terrorism, cybercrime, organized and emerging crime, financial crime and anti-terrorism. INTERPOL’s digital tools include Databases (that contain information on wanted persons, fingerprints, DNA Samples, and travel documents); and I-24/7 Network (an encrypted global communications system that gives access to police data).

Interpol’s AI Toolkit: Enabling Law Enforcement to Harness AI

The Interpol AI toolkit was developed through a participatory-comprehensive approach of multi stakeholders and through a partnership with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), with financial support from the European Union.

Interpol’s AI Toolkit will benefit a diverse pool of beneficiaries from law enforcement agencies, technology developers in the private sector or academia, civil society, the public, and other criminal justice actors such as the judiciary, prosecutors, lawyers, and global stakeholders.

The Interpol’s AI Toolkit is a complementary tool that aims to offer support to law enforcement agencies to navigate complex tasks of institutionalizing responsible AI. It has both theoretical and practical tools based on human rights law, ethics, and policing principles. It consists of seven individual resources and a comprehensive user guide.

AI Enhanced Law Enforcement

Moreover, the advancements of AI support for practical use of AI in societal challenges, the AI Toolkit, together with the INTERPOL Responsible AI Lab (I-RAIL), sets a base framework for all INTERPOL future AI-related activities. As AI advancements continue, there is a huge potential to successfully support automatic patrol systems, identification of vulnerable and exploited children and police emergency call centres.

Responsible Use of AI in Global Security

Given the changing nature of international security, modern society requires all security apparatus to deliver timely and accurate interventions. As a response, Interpol’s innovation is forward thinking, it seeks to leverage AI capabilities to address law enforcement in a timely fashion, responsible way, inline with policing principles, human rights and ethical standards.

This AI innovation is a milestone for Interpol and Global Security as it is deployed globally as Interpol’s currently operates in 196 member states. The advancements in AI systems allow for deliberations on the limitations and risks of the use of AI for ethical and global good.
