
In the past few years, the swirl of synthetic images, deepfake videos, and AI-generated memes has invaded our feeds so seamlessly that the boundary between “real” and “fake” feels increasingly permeable. And now, Meta’s latest launch of Vibes, a short-form video feed dedicated entirely to AI content, suggests that even giants of social media are recognising the need for segregation of AI material.
What if, instead of mixing human-created and AI content in the same feed, we carved out a separate platform exclusively for AI-generated media? The logic is compelling: it would help users distinguish authenticity from artifice, reduce noise on traditional platforms, and force clearer attribution of AI creation.
Why the blurring matters
Several recent studies suggest humans are already reaching the limits of what they can reliably detect. In one benchmark, participants misclassified AI-generated images nearly 39 per cent of the time. Other studies found that people’s ability to spot fakes is barely better than chance across images, video, and audio. Meanwhile, one Microsoft study showed humans could correctly identify real versus AI images only about 62 per cent of the time. And as synthetic media generators continue to improve, the gap will only widen.
The danger lies in misinformation, deepfake impersonations, or purely visual hoaxes that can spawn confusion, reputational harm, or even political destabilisation. Although some platforms already try labelling AI content, such labelling is reactive, partial, and often inconsistent.
Short videos and images are compact, attention-grabbing, and the hardest to contextualise. A single frame or two of distortion, mismatch of lip sync, or odd lighting might tip off experts, but ordinary users see only a fleeting clip. Especially on mobile, we consume quickly, without pausing to investigate. That makes images and video ideal vehicles for synthetic deception
What a dedicated AI media platform could look like
Imagine a “Synthetic Social” platform, a streaming feed or gallery where all content must be AI-originated (images, animations, short videos, audio). Human creators who want to showcase their generative work would publish there. This way, non-AI creators would not be allowed, even as AI content would be completely barred from traditional social networks.
This architecture would yield several benefits:
- Clear demarcation. Every user would intuitively know that if it’s on this platform, it is synthetic. No need to second-guess or rely on guesswork.
- Noise control. Mainstream platforms would see fewer to no generative distractions, making it easier for human content writing, photography, and vlogs to stand out without competing against the flood of AI output.
- Encouraging attribution. A dedicated platform compels creators to label, tag, or credential their generative work, helping researchers, fact-checkers, and sceptical viewers trace origin or detect misuse.
- Curated norms and quality. The platform could enforce standards (no attempts to mislead, no impersonation, no undesirable or nonconsensual uses), reducing the chances of malign content dominating the space.
- Transparent innovation. Because the platform’s business model is distinct (e.g. subscription, tip jars, generative-asset markets), it would be less pressured to hide AI disclosure or bury metadata.
We already see inklings of this. The art world gave rise to Cara, a social image app explicitly founded to protect artists from AI scraping and that filters or disallows AI-generated uploads. And creators are increasingly shifting to niche, focused platforms (Substack, Patreon, Beehiiv) to preserve control in an era of AI-driven “attention slop.” But those platforms are not media pipelines—they’re about text, subscription, or controlled distribution. We need one built for synthetic audiovisual content itself.
Objections and challenges
Critics may point out some real challenges to this plan, as highlighted below.
- Fragmentation: Would people migrate, and will creators have to split their audience? Possibly. But as the default social feeds continue to grow toxic with generative noise, many will certainly welcome a “quiet zone.”
- Enforcement and policing: Bad actors might still attempt to upload fakes to the “real world” feeds or cloak AI content. And for this reason, vigilant moderation and cryptographic content credentials would be essential.
- Innovation stifling. Some may argue that blending is how creativity hybridises. But blending without labelling is disinformation masquerading as creation. A dedicated space doesn’t stop blending; it just forces clarity.
- Scale and adoption. Getting network effects is always hard. But major platforms already dabble in AI-only features (e.g. Meta’s Vibes feed). That signals both awareness and willingness to segment.
The longer view
We may find in a decade that users have “real feeds,” “AI feeds,” and “augmented feeds” (hybrids). The more structured we make those distinctions now, the stronger our guardrails will be. A dedicated platform for synthetic content is not about censorship—it’s about enabling credibility, giving users clear context, and defeating the illusion that synthetic media is inherently “real.”
