The explosion of artificial intelligence into mainstream content creation has reshaped how we consume, trust, and engage with information.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has emerged as one of the clearest voices sounding the alarm about this shift, warning that digital media may soon be overwhelmed by what he and others increasingly call “AI slop” — a deluge of synthetic content that dilutes trust and blurs the line between real and fake.

In a candid public reflection late last year, Mosseri put it bluntly: “For most of my life, I could safely assume photographs or videos were largely accurate captures of moments that happened. This is clearly no longer the case,” he wrote. “We’re going to move from assuming what we see is real by default, to starting with skepticism.”

This is not tech pundit hyperbole — it’s a sobering assessment from a platform leader who sees the daily reality of AI-generated content flooding social feeds.

The scale of the challenge speaks for itself. Recent research shows that over 20 per cent of recommended videos to new users on YouTube qualify as “AI slop” — low-effort, algorithmically generated content designed to maximize clicks rather than deliver human insight.

Meanwhile, independent studies find that as many as 82 per cent of adults admit they’ve mistaken AI-generated images for real, a trend that has corroded confidence in digital media and eroded trust in institutions.

These shifts have profound implications. When audiences can no longer rely on visual or textual content to reflect reality, misinformation — whether political, commercial, or social — spreads more readily. Visa’s recent findings underscore this risk: consumers who mistake fake AI posts for authentic content are nearly nine times more likely to fall victim to scams than those who don’t.

Mosseri has been clear that the responsibility doesn’t rest with users alone.
He has publicly hinted at measures to help users discern AI-generated content, including improved labels and credibility signals — a step toward restoring trust. “Instagram is going to have to evolve in a number of ways, and fast,” he said, acknowledging that platforms must not only detect synthetic media but clearly signal authenticity to users.

Yet platform efforts remain uneven. A recent audit found that major social networks correctly label only about one in three pieces of AI content, with Instagram among those struggling to apply accurate metadata consistently.

These shortcomings highlight a broader industry challenge: AI’s capacity to produce plausible-looking images, videos, and narratives now far outpaces existing detection and labelling frameworks.

The implications extend beyond misinformation. As Mosseri pointed out, the erosion of authenticity transforms the very way we relate to each other online. If consumers grow accustomed to expecting artificiality, trust — the foundation of meaningful digital interaction — is at risk.

Platforms may have to compensate with richer context, clearer provenance metadata, and deeper transparency around who is creating content and why.

There is, however, a potential silver lining. By reinforcing the value of human-generated content and investing in tools that clearly distinguish it from synthetic media, platforms can create new avenues of discovery and reward for genuine creators.

Authentic voices — those anchored in lived experience and transparent intent — may stand out in a crowded landscape precisely because they are verifiable.

As 2026 progresses, the conversation around AI and authenticity will only intensify. Mosseri’s warnings reflect a broader recognition across the tech world that content ecosystems must adapt or face an erosion of trust too deep to reverse.
