OpenAI Deepens Samsung Partnership on Next Generation Chips

OpenAI is deepening its partnership with Samsung Electronics as the ChatGPT developer works with the South Korean technology giant on next-generation chips.

OpenAI Deepens Samsung Partnership on Next Generation Chips

Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, said the companies had made significant progress in joint research and production of next-generation chips, although he did not disclose details about the technology or Samsung’s specific role.

“One of the areas where we have made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung Electronics is our joint production and research on the next-generation chips we are developing,” Kim said at a press conference in Seoul.

The partnership expands an existing relationship between the two companies as OpenAI seeks greater control over the hardware needed to support its rapidly growing artificial intelligence services.

In June, OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, known as Jalapeno, which it developed with US semiconductor company Broadcom. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is expected to manufacture the chips.

Samsung and SK Hynix, another major South Korean chipmaker, have also signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI’s Stargate data centre project.

Kim said demand for memory chips was expected to increase as AI systems require more advanced semiconductors to support faster and more complex computing. He said cooperation with South Korean semiconductor companies would therefore remain a priority for OpenAI.

The relationship also extends to enterprise AI. Kim said Samsung was among the largest users of ChatGPT globally, with employees in South Korea and other markets using the technology for research and development, marketing and sales.

Samsung said it could not confirm information relating to its customers.

OpenAI said the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies and institutions had increased about 28-fold by the end of August from a year earlier, as businesses expanded their use of AI beyond individual tasks to company-wide operations.

Businesses are increasingly using AI across functions including legal services, sales, finance, marketing and operations, according to OpenAI.

South Korea also had the largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers outside the United States as of late 2025, the company said.

The deepening partnership comes as OpenAI invests heavily in custom chips and data centre infrastructure to support the growing computing requirements of its AI models.

OpenAI also expects demand for its services to accelerate following the September 4 launch of GPT-6 Astra, its latest AI model.

The expanded cooperation with Samsung could therefore give OpenAI access to additional semiconductor expertise and manufacturing capacity while providing Samsung with a major technology partner as global demand for AI chips and memory continues to rise.
