Three plaintiffs, including two minors, have filed a lawsuit against xAI in the United States of America, alleging its Grok image-generation tool was used to create sexually explicit images of them without consent.

The complaint was filed in a federal court in California and seeks class-action status on behalf of individuals across the United States who were identifiable in similar AI-generated images, according to people familiar with the case.
The plaintiffs claim the company designed its system in a way that allowed users to upload real photos and transform them into explicit content. They allege that images of them were altered and circulated online, causing harm and violating their privacy.
Reuters reported that the images were created using Grok, an artificial intelligence tool developed by xAI. The lawsuit alleges that the system enabled the manipulation of identifiable individuals’ photos into explicit material.
The case involves three individuals from Tennessee. Two are minors, while the third was underage at the time the alleged images were created, according to the complaint.
The plaintiffs are seeking damages and legal remedies, including restrictions on the use of the technology. They argue that the company failed to implement sufficient safeguards to prevent misuse of its image-generation tools. xAI has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
Earlier this year, the company said it had taken steps to limit the creation of certain types of images involving real people. These measures included blocking attempts to generate or edit images of individuals in revealing contexts where such use would be unlawful.
The lawsuit follows previous scrutiny of Grok and similar AI tools over their ability to generate altered images using real photographs. Reports have documented cases where such tools were used to create manipulated images without the subject’s consent.
The plaintiffs’ filing states that the images in question were derived from personal or publicly available photos and later distributed online. They argue that the resulting content misrepresented them and caused distress.
The case is one of several recent legal actions involving AI-generated imagery. It is the first known lawsuit filed by minors alleging that xAI’s tools were used to generate explicit images based on their likeness.
The proceedings are ongoing, and no court rulings have been issued yet.
