Phone scams have become one of the most persistent threats in the digital age, often targeting older people or those less familiar with modern technology. Now, the caller-ID app Truecaller is introducing a new feature designed to allow families to step in and stop suspicious calls before damage is done.
The company recently launched a capability that allows one member of a family group to remotely end a scam call on behalf of another user. The feature is part of Truecaller’s broader “Family Protection” initiative, which aims to turn scam prevention into a shared responsibility rather than an individual task.
Under the system, a trusted member of the family (typically the most tech-savvy) can become the group’s administrator. Once the group is created, up to five people can join and benefit from shared protection tools against suspicious calls and spam.
When a member of the group receives a call that the platform flags as potentially fraudulent, the administrator receives an alert. If the admin believes the call poses a risk, they can remotely terminate it before the person on the other end falls victim to a scam.
The feature works across both Android and iOS devices in terms of alerts, though the ability to remotely end calls currently functions only for Android users.
Fraudsters increasingly rely on social engineering tactics that pressure victims into making quick decisions, sharing sensitive information, or transferring money. By allowing another person to intervene in real time, Truecaller hopes to reduce the chances that vulnerable users will be manipulated during these calls.
The new tool also includes additional oversight features designed to give families greater visibility into potential threats. Administrators can receive notifications about suspicious calls, manage blocklists for the group, and monitor basic status indicators such as device activity.
Truecaller says the idea is to empower what it describes as the “CTO of the family” to protect relatives who may be less comfortable navigating digital threats.
The launch builds on the platform’s broader mission of combating phone-based fraud. With more than 450 million users globally, Truecaller relies on community reporting and data analysis to identify suspicious numbers and warn users in real time.
