They should clearly disclose that users are speaking to a machine, not a human. And crucially, human oversight should never disappear. Even the best algorithm cannot replicate empathy, moral reasoning, or human presence.

Privacy protections must evolve, too. Encryption, anonymisation, and strict data governance are non-negotiable. Users should have the right to opt out or delete their data at any point. These principles are not obstacles to innovation; they are the foundation of trust.

Ultimately, the healthiest vision for AI in mental health is a collaborative one. AI can track patterns a therapist might miss, nudge users toward mindfulness, and scale access to millions. But therapy’s heart remains human: the fragile, healing bond between two people.

As technology continues to blur the boundaries between human and machine, society must decide what it values most in care between the efficiency of automation and the empathy of connection. If we strike the right balance, AI could become more than a clever listener; it could become a bridge to better mental health, extending support where it’s needed most while reminding us that the soul of healing still belongs to us.
