United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will take part in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in Paris on 10 and 11 February 2025.

The event is co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit brings together nearly 100 countries, leaders of international organisations, researchers and representatives of civil society to lay the foundations for global governance of AI.

Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, will also take part in the discussions, along with other experts and senior UN officials.

A priority for the United Nations –

António Guterres wants to see the establishment of global governance for artificial intelligence, to regulate the design, operation and use of this new tool. He believes that AI is an “existential concern” for humanity, and that it must remain a tool at the service of humanity, and not a source of inequalities and unbridled risks.

The Paris summit will focus on five main themes: AI in the public interest; the impact of AI on the future of work; the promotion of innovation that respects cultural diversity; the ethics and reliability of AI technologies; and the establishment of international standards for effective regulation.

Towards responsible and inclusive AI –

The summit is a key platform for discussing the challenges and opportunities associated with AI. A non-binding statement could be adopted, laying the foundations for responsible AI in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The summit is part of a wider effort to strengthen the sovereignty of nations in the field of technology, while ensuring that developing countries also have access to the benefits of this digital revolution.

The discussions should therefore shape an AI that is sustainable, beneficial and inclusive, with particular attention paid to the risks of abuse and the protection of individual rights.

The Paris event will mark a turning point in global cooperation on artificial intelligence, placing ethics and solidarity at the heart of international priorities.
