AI has the potential to be a big enabler, reducing economic gaps across the globe. As Sylvain Duranton, Managing Director and Senior Partner at Boston Consulting Group, pointed out, the data shows that people in the global south are using generative AI more than their counterparts in the global north. This is because AI is enabling them to jump over previous obstacles, empowering those who previously had limited access to expertise, education, or experience.

Action Summit at Paris

During a fireside chat at the AI Action Summit in France, a panel of experts delved into the evolving impact of AI on the workforce, offering a hopeful and exciting vision for the future.

Celina Lee, the CEO of Zindi Africa, echoed Sylvain’s sentiment, highlighting a crucial point. While James Manyika, Senior VP for Research at Google, is correct that it’s easier to learn and pick up AI tools today, reducing the need for extensive training, Celina stressed the incredible importance of empowering people to become builders of these AI tools, especially in Africa.

She shared that Africans today are not trained and empowered with GPUs to build their own solutions for the billion people who live in Africa. This must change today, through partnerships with organizations like Alliance4AI, African governments, and AI communities.

The panel’s discussion underscored the collaborative and multifaceted approach needed to ensure a smooth and equitable transition as AI transforms the workforce. James Manyika shared Google’s efforts to provide digital skills to over 100 million people globally and create an AI Opportunity Fund for re-skilling, demonstrating the private sector’s commitment to upskilling the workforce.

However, the experts acknowledged the challenges posed by austerity measures in many countries, which have hindered public investment in workforce development. They emphasized the critical need for governments, employers, and educational institutions to work together to address these obstacles and create the necessary incentives for companies, especially smaller ones, to invest in upskilling their employees.

AI Revolution

The panelists also explored the dual aspects of the AI revolution – the need to retool existing workers and the emergence of new career paths in building AI solutions. They highlighted the lower barriers to using AI tools, compared to previous digital technologies, as an opportunity to drive widespread adoption and productivity gains among workers.

As the world grapples with the evolving relationship between AI and the workforce, this fireside chat offered a hopeful and exciting vision. By fostering collaboration, empowering people to become builders of AI solutions, and creating the right incentives, the experts believe we can unlock the transformative power of AI to benefit individuals, communities, and economies around the globe.
